12 Great Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurants in Tulum

Tulum might be the most vegan-friendly place I’ve ever lived! Finding vegetarian and vegan food in Tulum is honestly like finding sand on the beach.

If you’re vegan or vegetarian, you won’t have any trouble here. Not only are there over a dozen vegan-only or vegetarian-only restaurants, but there was a vegan option on every single menu I saw in the hotel zone.

However, it’s worth noting that meat-free “street food” or local ood in town is harder to come by.

You’ll be eating at more western or tourist-oriented restaurants most of the time. These will be at California prices. (If you’re looking for more budget-friendly and veggie-friendly food scene, try Oaxaca instead.)

For lots of travelers, though, the convenience of having a plant-based option almost everywhere is totally worth it!

Here are a dozen restaurants where I enjoyed great vegetarian and vegan food in Tulum:

IN TOWN:

1. Co.ConAmor

Best for: BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Recommendations: (ALL-VEGETARIAN MENU)

-Thai Burger – VEGAN

-Avocado toast – VEGETARIAN

-House-brewed kombucha – VEGAN

-All 3 aloe vera based drinks – VEGAN

This vegan and vegetarian mecca is a big, open, multi-use hippie space full of love and deliciousness. I adored every single thing I ordered here.

Each dish is made to order from whole plant foods, so service can be a little slow but very friendly.

There’s also a zero-waste/low-waste store on site with everything from vegan shampoo refills to essential oils. Be sure to check out their yoga classes, too!

2. Burrito Amor

Best for: BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Recommendations:

-Nopal (cactus) grilled burrito – VEGAN

-Egg and Chaya (mayan spinach) breakfast burrito – VEGETARIAN

-‘Amor Bowl’ (house coconut yogurt, house granola, fruit) – VEGAN

-Black bean and pumpkin salad – VEGAN

-‘Cinnamon Roll’ smoothie – VEGAN

Eating vegan food in Tulum definitely doesn’t have to mean diet food. These burritos are super hearty and filling. You have to try at least one of these banana-leaf-grilled, monstrous piles of goodness before you leave Tulum!

Plus, gluten-free coconut flour tortillas are an option for every burrito

3. Humo

Best for: ALL DAY

Recommendations:

-Terriyaki mushroom avocado toast – VEGAN

-Mushroom sopes – VEGAN

-Rotation of VEGETARIAN tacos

-All their salads – VEGAN

Humo is generally famous for its seafood, but there were BOMB veggie options every single time I went. I wish I could have eaten here a dozen more times before I left Tulum! Plus, their menu has clear vegan and vegetarian icons.

4. Pitted Date

Best for: BREAKFAST (served all day)

Recommendations: (ALL-VEGAN MENU)

-Hot Cakes

-Omelettes

-Bagelwich

-Jackfruit Burger

In my opinion, it’s overpriced even for the area (vegan food in Tulum doesn’t have to be this expensive). But , but if you’re craving cruelty-free breakfast for dinner, it’s a nice veggie option to have in your back pocket!

5. Pizza Manglar

Best for: DINNER, DELIVERY

Recommendations:

-Veggie Pizza as is – VEGETARIAN

-Veggie Pizza no cheese, extra veg, with chili oil – VEGAN

My personal favorite vegan pizza in town! They’re sure to please your carnivore friends too.

6. La Hydra by Gigi

Best for: DINNER

Recommendations:

-Margherita Pizza – VEGETARIAN

-Veggie Pizza (with or without cheese) – VEGAN

-Off-Menu* House-made pasta of the day, substitute marinara and eggplant for any other sauces or meats – VEGAN

Best-kept secret is their off-menu vegan pasta. Posada Margherita’s pasta comes in at a close second for the hotel zone.

BEACH/HOTEL ZONE:

6. Matcha Mama

vegan smoothie bowl with fruits and coconut at Matcha Mama in Tulum Mexico

Best for: BREAKFAST, SNACK

Recommendations:

-Mamasita smoothie bowl – VEGAN

-Coconut and cacao nice cream with toppings – VEGAN

An iconic, highly instagrammable spot that is a little over-hyped and a little more over-priced (~$12/bowl). It’s still my favorite smoothie bowl in all of Tulum, so it makes the list. I suggest asking for your smoothie bowl ‘extra blended.’

Heads up: minimal seating, maximum vlogger-to-normie ratio.

7. The Real Coconut

Vegetarian brunch wth egg and avocado and sweet potato hash browns at The Real Coconut restaurant in Tulum Mexico

Best for: BRUNCH

Recommendations:

-Sweet potato hash browns – VEGETARIAN or VEGAN (sub avo for egg)

-Golden latte – VEGAN

The Real Coconut uses fresh whole ingredients free of gluten, grains, and dairy. The food is always excellent, but the service can get a little slow when large families from the resort crowd the dining area.

It’s a nice for a relaxed, healthy brunch with an ocean view. Hands-down the best coffee bar menu in town, too!

8. Raw Love

Best for: BREAKFAST

Recommendations: (ALL RAW VEGAN MENU)

-Health Belly smoothie bowl

-Açai smoothie bowl

-Avocado toast with sauerkraut and cashew cheese

Raw Love has 2 locations, town and beach. I ordered delivery from town, and visited the beach location in person. The quality at the beach seemed to be a little higher, so I’d suggest heading there if you have a choice!

While Raw Love is well-known for their smoothie bowls, their savory options are really not to be missed.

9. Kitchen Table

Best for: DINNER , DATE NIGHT

Recommendations:

-Vegan salad

-Vegetarian or vegan option recommended by waiter

Notes:

Kitchen Table is well known for their magical jungle kitchen atmosphere and excellent service. While they only had 3 vegetarian and vegan options on the menu when I visited, don’t be alarmed. Quality over quantity!

The vegan salad I ordered ended up being my favorite menu item (compared to amazing seafood dishes) and my favorite salad in Mexico.

*Important: PLEASE tell the waiter that you’re vegetarian or vegan, and ask what they recommend. My friend had special off-menu tacos made for her this way. The staff here are excellent and will not steer you wrong.

Kitchen Table’s most popular offerings are their octopus and surf-and-turf style dishes. So, plenty of non-meat eaters steer clear (that kind of menu doesn’t really come to mind for vegan food in Tulum). But, because they’re so accomodating, Kitchen Table is actually a fantastic option for a mixed friend group of veggies and hard-cor carnivores.

Reservations required.

11. MurMur

Best for: DINNER, DATE NIGHT, DRINKS

Recommendations:

-Roasted Squash Entree – VEGETARIAN or VEGAN (no butter)

-Spicy Paloma

-Mezcal Old Fashioned

Notes:

The service at this fine dining spot is unbeatable. Compared to its neighbors Hartwood and Gitanos, Mur Mur is the clear front runner in all categories.

The manager takes special care to accomodate dietary restrictions, so be sure to ask. On my digital nomad girl’s night out, they fed a carnivore, pescatarian, and vegan trio *exceptionally* well. Delicious appetizers and entrees for all.

Mur Mur’s cocktail menu is phenomenal too, so definitely stay for after-dinner drinks.

Reservations strongly suggested. But if you forgot to call in advance, try showing up before 6pm for an early seating; this worked for us a few times.

12. Charly’s Vegan Tacos

*Disclaimer: Charly’s was still closed due to covid-19 when I was living in Tulum, so I have not personally tried it. However, it comes super highly recommended by Tulum-based expats. The same is true for El Vegetariano and La Hoja Verde.

Since a few fan favorites recently re-opened in the last month, you should try them out and tell us all about it in the comments below!
